The book begins with the launch of Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite to orbit the Earth, by the Soviet Union in 1957. This event shocked the United States and led to a major reassessment of the country's space program. The United States responded with the launch of Explorer 1, the first American satellite, in 1958, and the two countries were soon engaged in a fierce competition to be the first to send a man into space.
The Soviets took the early lead in the space race, sending cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin into orbit around the Earth in 1961. However, the United States soon caught up, and in 1962, astronaut John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth. The race to the moon was now on.
In 1969, the United States finally achieved its goal of landing a man on the moon. Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the surface of the moon. This event was a major triumph for the United States and a turning point in the space race.
The Great Space Race is a fascinating and informative account of one of the most important events in human history. The book is well-written and thoroughly researched, and it provides a comprehensive overview of the space race from both the American and Soviet perspectives.
