As a primatologist, I have had the extraordinary privilege of spending decades studying orangutans in the wild. These gentle giants, with their soulful eyes and intelligent expressions, have always fascinated me. In my new book, Orangutans: My Cousins, My Friends, I share my personal journey of discovery and love for these amazing creatures.

The book begins with my first encounter with orangutans in the rainforests of Borneo. I was immediately struck by their intelligence and their gentle nature. I spent hours observing them, learning about their behavior and their social structure. Over time, I came to see them not just as research subjects, but as my friends.

One of the most amazing things about orangutans is their ability to use tools. I have seen them use sticks to dig for insects, leaves to build nests, and even stones to crack open nuts. Their intelligence is evident in their problem-solving abilities as well. I have watched them figure out how to open complex locks and even use mirrors to see behind them.

Orangutans are also very social animals. They live in groups of up to 50 individuals, and they have a complex system of communication. They use vocalizations, gestures, and facial expressions to communicate with each other. I have even seen them use sign language to communicate with humans.

Orangutans are facing a number of threats, including habitat loss, poaching, and the illegal pet trade. I am committed to working to protect these amazing creatures. I hope that my book will help to raise awareness about the challenges they face and inspire others to join me in the fight to save them.
