By Jean-Jacques Rousseau
First published in 1762, Emile, or On Education is a treatise on the nature and purpose of education by the Genevan philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. The book became influential during the late Enlightenment and Romantic era, particularly among proponents of natural education.
Emile is a fictional character who represents the ideal student. Rousseau argues that Emile should be educated according to the laws of nature, rather than the artificial constraints of society. He should be allowed to learn at his own pace, and his education should be based on experience and observation rather than rote memorization.
Rousseau's ideas about education were radical for his time. He believed that children should not be forced to learn anything that they did not want to learn. He also believed that children should be allowed to make mistakes, and that they should learn from their own experiences.
Emile, or On Education is a challenging and thought-provoking book. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of education or in the philosophy of education.
