From Prehistoric Hunters to Viking Raiders

Caithness has been inhabited since the Mesolithic era, around 8000 BC, as evidenced by the discovery of flint arrowheads and other stone tools.

The Neolithic period (4000-2500 BC) saw the emergence of farming communities, who left behind a legacy of impressive chambered tombs, such as the well-preserved Camster Cairns and the evocative Warth Hill.

During the Bronze Age (2500-800 BC),bronze artifacts became widespread, including weapons, tools, and ornaments. Caithness also boasts numerous Bronze Age burial mounds, revealing the region's importance as a center of ritual and ceremony.

In the Iron Age (800 BC-AD 400),the inhabitants of Caithness constructed a series of defensive forts known as duns. These strongholds, such as the formidable Dunbeath Castle, provided protection from raiding parties.

The arrival of the Vikings in the 8th century AD marked a new chapter in Caithness's history. Viking influence is evident in place names, archaeological finds, and the region's rich oral traditions.
