The pilot's name was George H. W. Bush. In 1944, Bush was a young naval aviator flying torpedo bombers off the carrier USS San Jacinto. On June 19, 1944, Bush's plane was shot down over the Pacific Ocean. He was rescued by a submarine and returned to duty.

In September 1944, Bush was assigned to a new mission: to fly a covert mission to rescue POWs from a German prison camp on the Eastern Front. The mission was extremely dangerous, but Bush was determined to succeed.

On September 14, 1944, Bush took off from a base in Italy in a P-51 Mustang fighter plane. He flew over enemy territory for hours, dodging anti-aircraft fire and German fighters. He finally reached the prison camp and began to circle overhead.

Bush knew that he could not land at the prison camp without being shot down. So he devised a plan to parachute into the camp and rescue the POWs on foot.

Bush landed in the prison camp at night. He quickly found the POWs and helped them to escape. The group made their way through the forest and eventually reached safety.

Bush's mission was a success. He rescued seven POWs and returned them to safety. For his bravery and determination, Bush was awarded the Navy Cross, the nation's second highest military honor.

Bush's story is a reminder of the courage, determination, and sacrifice of the men and women who fought in World War II. It is a story that should never be forgotten.
