Synopsis

Ahead of Her Time is a captivating story about Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to graduate from medical school in the United States. This inspiring novel follows Elizabeth's journey as she overcomes prejudice and discrimination to become a successful physician and a pioneer for women's rights.

Elizabeth Blackwell was born in 1821 in Bristol, England. She was the daughter of a sugar refiner and abolitionist. Elizabeth was a bright and ambitious young woman, and she dreamed of becoming a doctor. However, at the time, women were not allowed to attend medical school.

Undeterred, Elizabeth applied to several medical schools in the United States. She was rejected by all of them, but she eventually found a school that was willing to admit her: the Geneva Medical College in New York.

Elizabeth faced many challenges during her time at medical school. She was often ridiculed and harassed by her classmates and professors. However, she persevered, and in 1849, she became the first woman to graduate from medical school in the United States.

After graduating from medical school, Elizabeth opened a dispensary for poor women in New York City. She also founded the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania, which was the first medical school for women in the United States.

Elizabeth Blackwell's life was a testament to her strength, determination, and courage. She was a pioneer for women's rights, and her work helped to pave the way for women in medicine.
