Elizabeth Warren is an American politician and author who has served as the senior United States Senator from Massachusetts since 2013. A member of the Democratic Party, she is a vocal advocate for economic justice and the rights of working families. Warren is the author of several books, including The Two-Income Trap: Why Middle-Class Parents are Going Broke and A Fighting Chance: The Struggle Over Economic Mobility in America.
Early Life and Education
Elizabeth Ann Herring was born on June 22, 1949, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Her father, Donald Jones Herring, was a salesman and farmer. Her mother, Pauline Louise Herring (née Reed),worked as a waitress. Warren has two older brothers, David and Don.
Warren's family was poor and she grew up in a modest home in Norman, Oklahoma. Her parents divorced when she was 12 years old, and she and her brothers were raised by their mother. Warren attended public schools in Norman and graduated from Norman High School in 1967.
Warren then attended George Washington University in Washington, D.C., where she studied speech pathology and audiology. She graduated summa cum laude in 1970 and went on to earn a J.D. from Rutgers Law School in Newark, New Jersey, in 1976.
Legal Career
After graduating from law school, Warren worked as a law professor at the University of Houston Law Center and the University of Pennsylvania Law School. She also served as a special assistant to the Attorney General of the United States in the Carter Administration.
In 1983, Warren became the first woman to serve as a tenured law professor at Harvard Law School. She taught bankruptcy law, commercial law, and family law. Warren also founded the Harvard Bankruptcy Law Project, which provides pro bono legal services to low-income individuals and families.
Political Career
Warren entered politics in 2008, when she was elected to the Massachusetts Senate. She served one term in the state Senate before being elected to the United States Senate in 2012.
As a Senator, Warren has been a vocal advocate for economic justice and the rights of working families. She has authored legislation to crack down on Wall Street, protect consumers, and make college more affordable. Warren is also a leading voice in the fight for women's equality and LGBTQ rights.
In 2019, Warren announced her candidacy for President of the United States. She ran on a platform of economic populism and social justice. Warren suspended her campaign in March 2020.
Author
In addition to her political career, Warren is also a successful author. Her book The Two-Income Trap: Why Middle-Class Parents are Going Broke, co-written with Amelia Warren Tyagi, was published in 2003. The book examines the challenges facing middle-class families in the United States and offers policy solutions to address these challenges.
Warren's second book, A Fighting Chance: The Struggle Over Economic Mobility in America, was published in 2014. The book explores the history of economic inequality in the United States and argues for policies that will promote economic mobility for all Americans.
