The Road to Runnymede

King John was a ruthless and unpopular ruler. He had alienated his barons by raising taxes and seizing their lands. In 1215, the barons rebelled and marched on London. John was forced to meet them at Runnymede, where he agreed to sign the Magna Carta.

The Magna Carta contained a number of provisions that limited the king's power. It guaranteed the right to a fair trial, protected property rights, and established the principle that no one is above the law.

The Legacy of the Magna Carta

The Magna Carta has been called the foundation of English liberty. It has served as a model for constitutions around the world. The principles it established continue to be enshrined in the laws of many nations.

The Magna Carta is also a reminder of the importance of standing up for one's rights. The barons who forced King John to sign the Magna Carta were willing to risk their lives to protect their liberties. Their courage and determination helped to shape the course of English history.
